Susudake Chashaku

Susudake Chashaku (Takayama, Ikoma, Nara, Japan):
Susudake is bamboo harvested from the ceilings of traditional straw-thatched houses, where it has been naturally darkened to a rich auburn hue by decades, or even centuries, of smoke exposure from the irori (sunken hearth). Its unique golden-brown color makes it a highly prized and sought-after material.
